It’s a Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Play

Every step in this design pushed me to think in ways that I was not accustomed to. First of all the play demands that a foley artist be used to help create the world, simply using a computer playback system would not do it justice by any means. Coming form a background of QLab and other computer based solutions this was an exciting challenge. Secondly it was going to actually be broadcast from KUMD, the campus radio station, along with a rebroadcast Christmas Eve. Researching how to execute the different effects live while keeping period pushed me to explore some research that I had not previous concept of. The live combo playing original music composed by Adam Booker brought us one step closer to being in an actual live room.

As Part of the research some of the cast and designers went to Minnesota Public Radio’s Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul MN to sit in on a broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. Experiencing it form the porch of the set gave several of us a unique look at how they worked. After the broadcast we had a small talkback session where we were able to ask some of the performers questions.
